What is epilepsy?
Epilepsy is a neurological disorder (a medical condition that affects the central nervous system) that causes disruptions in brain activity, which results in various physical responses, including seizures, loss of awareness and loss of other sensations.
Most children diagnosed with epilepsy experience seizures, which are uncontrolled disturbances in brain activity. Seizures often result in involuntary movements, which can last several seconds, minutes or much longer.
Seizures are categorized into two major groups – generalized onset seizures and focal onset seizures. Generalized onset seizures affect both sides of the brain. Focal onset seizures affect a specific part of the brain.
In addition, seizures are divided into two categories depending on whether someone is conscious or confused while having a seizure. People who are awake and aware they are having a seizure are having what’s called a focal onset aware seizure. People that are confused and unaware of their surroundings are having what’s called a focal onset impaired awareness seizure.
What causes epilepsy in infants?
Newborn infants with epilepsy often have this medical condition due to a brain injury caused by negligent medical professionals. Mistakes made during a baby’s delivery or soon after their birth often cause such injuries. Specific causes can include:
- Prolonged labor or delayed delivery.
- Head injuries, including brain injuries, especially sustained during the baby’s delivery or soon after.
- Infections, including sepsis, sustained during pregnancy or the baby’s delivery in a hospital, where serious infections are common.
- Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), a type of brain injury due to lack of oxygen.
These are just some of the reasons why newborn infants have epilepsy. Whatever the circumstances, make sure you fully understand your rights, especially if a medical professional’s negligence caused your child’s medical condition. That’s why it’s important that you meet with attorney Lancione as soon as possible.
